History
01 · Origin
Akita Prefecture, northern Honshu
A large spitz-type dog from the snowy north of Honshu, around the Akita and Ōdate area.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Ancestral dogs of the region were used for hunting large game and as guard dogs; in the Meiji era some were crossed with other breeds for dog fighting.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Preservationists in the early 20th century worked to restore the native type. After the Second World War, Japanese and American lines diverged, eventually treated as separate breeds by many registries.
