Historical context · Today
Context · 1843Royal Collection painting (1843) whose catalogue title names 'a Basenji from the Niger' — the small dog in the centre. The name is the catalogue's; the dog's identity as today's breed, and any line of descent, are unproven.

History
01 · Origin
Congo Basin, Central Africa
A hunting dog of Central African peoples, from the Congo region.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Flushed and drove game into hunters' nets in dense forest.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Early export attempts failed; foundation stock was established in England in the 1930s and then in the United States. Genetic studies class the Basenji as a basal, genetically distinct dog lineage, which researchers link to long isolation from other breeds rather than to proven great age.
04 · Today
Companion · Lure coursing
An independent, cat-like companion and lure-coursing dog.
