02 · Historical role
What it was bred for

Its origins are unknown. In 1781 a writer described Bergamasco shepherds using large woolly-coated dogs to guard and drive their flocks; a dog of the type was shown in Milan in 1881. A standard was drafted in 1946, ENCI and the FCI recognized the breed in 1956, and the AKC in 2015.

General breed tendencies, not guarantees — individual dogs vary with genetics, training and environment. Ratings: the AKC’s trait scores as its breed page gives them (the AKC’s 1–5 guidance for owners, not a measurement). Other profiles here use editorial ratings, a different source, so compare across them with care.
- Exercise
- Moderate daily exercise, ideally an activity shared with its people.
- Grooming
- Once the coat has been separated into flocks, from about a year old, little routine grooming: no brushing, and baths only two or three times a year.
- Training
- Intelligent and independent: early socialization; it complies best when it understands what is wanted and why.
