History
01 · Origin
England
An old English breed of mastiff type.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Its ancestors were used in the cruel sport of bull-baiting, where tenacity and a strong grip were prized.

How it changed
After Britain banned baiting sports in 1835, enthusiasts reshaped the bulldog into a calmer companion. Selective breeding for appearance later exaggerated the short face and heavy build and brought health problems such as brachycephaly.
