History
01 · Origin
Western Highlands and the Isle of Skye
A small, shaggy Highland terrier bred to dig vermin out of stone cairns.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Bolting rats, foxes and otters from the cairns (stone heaps) and rocks of Highland farms and estates.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Scottish terriers were long lumped together. Shown from 1909 as the 'Short-haired Skye Terrier', it was renamed after Skye Terrier breeders objected; the Kennel Club gave it a separate register in 1912. According to Wikipedia, white Cairns had to be registered as West Highland White Terriers in the US from 1917.
