History
01 · Origin
Southern Italy (Apulia)
A large Italian farm guardian that the AKC traces to Roman-era molossers.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Guarded farms and livestock, drove cattle and helped hunters with large game such as wild boar.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
As rural life changed in the 20th century the type nearly disappeared. Enthusiasts in the 1970s searched southern Italy for surviving dogs and rebuilt the breed, which the FCI accepted provisionally in 1996 and fully in 2007, and the AKC recognized in 2010.
