History
01 · Origin
Denmark and southern Sweden
A small, smooth-coated, mostly white Scandinavian farm dog that caught rats, watched the yard and herded.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
An all-purpose farm dog: ratter, watchdog, hunting dog and herder.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Its numbers fell as industrialization reduced the small farms; it was still found across the Danish and southern Swedish countryside until the 1960s, and in the 1980s the Danish Kennel Club set out to save it. The Danish and Swedish kennel clubs revived it together and recognized it in 1987; the AKC recognized it in 2025.
