History
01 · Origin
Germany
A medium-sized, smooth-coated German ratter, the prototype of the pinschers.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Killing rats; kept as a stable dog and carriage dog.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Smooth and rough pinschers came from the same stock; the rough ones became the Schnauzer. The breed nearly vanished after the Second World War and Werner Jung rebuilt it from one standard-sized dog and four large Miniature Pinschers; a litter was born in 1958. In 2022 the German rare-breeds society GEH listed it as endangered.
