History
01 · Origin
Vendée, western France
A small, rough-coated, short-legged French hound from the brambly Vendée, with a beard and eyebrows.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Trailing hare and rabbit through rocks and thorny cover.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
One of four Griffon Vendéen breeds. In the early 20th century Paul Dézamy, president of the new breed club, drew up a standard covering both the Grand and the Petit; a 1909 standard set two sizes, and the Petit received its own standard in the 1950s. Petits and Grands could be interbred until 1975, when the club's president Hubert Dézamy ended it.
