What it was bred for
Hunting raccoon and opossum at night; also used on larger game.
03 · Breed development
How it changed

General breed tendencies, not guarantees — individual dogs vary with genetics, training and environment. Ratings: the AKC’s trait scores as its breed page gives them (the AKC’s 1–5 guidance for owners, not a measurement). Other profiles here use editorial ratings, a different source, so compare across them with care.
- Exercise
- Moderate daily exercise; a tall, solid fence, since it follows any scent.
- Grooming
- A weekly brush; sheds once or twice a year.
- Training
- Affectionate but independent: expect cooperation, not instant obedience.
Living with one
- Size
- Large
- Lifespan
- 10–12 years
- Coat
- Short, dense coal-black coat with rich tan markings
Field note
It trails much like a Bloodhound, by scent alone, and 'barks up' when its quarry is treed.
