History
01 · Origin
Boston, Massachusetts
Developed in Boston, chiefly from the descendants of Judge, a bulldog-and-terrier cross imported from England.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Its bull-and-terrier ancestors were fighting and ratting dogs; the Boston itself was bred down into a companion.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
A dog called Hooper's Judge, brought to Boston around 1870, is usually named as the breed's foundation. Breeders reduced its size and fighting instincts, and the AKC recognised the breed in 1893 — one of the few breeds to have originated in the United States.
