01 · Origin
Scottish Highlands (Guisachan estate)
Developed in the Scottish Highlands by Dudley Marjoribanks (later Lord Tweedmouth) on his Guisachan estate.

What it was bred for
Bred to retrieve shot waterfowl and game in a rainy climate and on rugged Highland terrain.

How it changed
Records show a yellow Flat-coated Retriever crossed with the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel, later refined with other retrievers and setters. Its breed standard asks for a biddable temperament as well as natural working ability.
