History
01 · Origin
Hungary (Carpathian Basin)
A large white Hungarian flock guardian, once kept at royal courts.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Guarding flocks against wolves and rustlers, and guarding noble households.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
The name probably comes from Old Turkic. King Matthias Corvinus is believed to have kept many at his 15th-century court. By the end of the Second World War nearly all Kuvasz in Hungary had been killed, with fewer than thirty reported to have survived; breeders rebuilt it afterwards.
