History
01 · Origin
Leonberg, Baden-Württemberg
A giant, lion-maned German dog bred as a majestic companion.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
A companion for royal households, later also a farm and water dog.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Heinrich Essig, a dog dealer and town councillor of Leonberg, said he crossed a Landseer Newfoundland with a Saint Bernard-type dog and later a Pyrenean Mountain Dog; legend says he wanted a dog like the lion on the town's crest. The breed lost most of its dogs in both world wars and was rebuilt.
