History
01 · Origin
North-western Siberia (Yamal and surrounding tundra)
Kept by Samoyedic peoples of the Siberian tundra for generations.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Herded reindeer, pulled sledges and lived closely with families, helping keep them warm.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Arctic explorers brought the dogs to Britain, and polar expeditions used them: Nansen's Fram expedition (1893–1896) bought dogs from the Nenets, and Amundsen reached the South Pole with Samoyeds in 1911. Early imports came in many colours, but white was held to be typical, and the first breed standard was drawn up in England in 1909.
