History
01 · Origin
Madagascar (named after the port of Toliara/Tuléar)
A small, white, cotton-coated bichon from Madagascar, once a favourite of the Merina nobility.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
A companion of the island's nobility.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Its bichon ancestors possibly reached Madagascar by ship in the 16th and 17th centuries. Sources disagree on its early life: the AKC standard says it once survived in packs in the wild, while Wikipedia says it was never feral and never hunted. Robert Jay Russell brought the first dogs to the United States in 1973; a Malagasy stamp featured it in 1974.
