History
01 · Origin
Iceland
A cheerful Nordic spitz, Iceland's only native dog, descended from the dogs of its Viking settlers.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Herding sheep and horses and announcing visitors on Icelandic farms.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
The dogs came with Norse settlers from 874; according to Wikipedia, this ancient origin is backed by archaeological and written evidence. It was known abroad by 1492, mentioned by John Caius in 1570 and in Shakespeare's 'Henry V'. Wikipedia reports that plague and distemper killed over 75% of the dogs in the late 19th century; by 1969 the breed was in imminent danger of extinction, and the Icelandic Kennel Club (founded that year) and a breed club (1979) worked to save it.
