01 · Origin

A medium spitz dog kept in the Netherlands, especially on river barges and farms.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
A watchdog and companion on barges and farms.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
In the 1780s the breed became a symbol of the Dutch Patriot faction. Its name is usually traced to the Patriot leader Cornelis (Kees) de Gyselaer, though the AKC notes it may instead refer to a mascot dog called Kees or to another Patriot leader with that nickname. A Dutch breed club was founded in 1924, and in 1926 the British Kennel Club accepted the breed under the name Keeshond.
