History

Algarve coast, southern Portugal
A water dog of Portuguese fishing communities, especially along the Algarve coast.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Swam between boats, herded fish into nets, retrieved lost gear and carried messages between boats and shore.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
As fishing modernised the dogs became scarce. Portuguese shipping magnate Vasco Bensaude began a breeding programme in the 1930s, and in the United States owners later formed a breed club; the AKC recognized the breed in 1984.
