History
01 · Origin
Flanders (Leuven and Brussels)
A small, black Belgian watchdog and ratter, with a profuse coat around the neck.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Watchdog and ratter for shopkeepers, craftsmen and, sometimes, barge owners.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Its name is usually said to mean 'little captain', but in Leuven and Brussels it may mean 'little shepherd': it is thought to descend from a black sheepdog, the Leuvenaar, also an ancestor of the Groenendael. It was first shown in 1882, and its breed club, founded in 1888, drew up the first standard that year.
