History
01 · Origin
France (marshes and coasts)
A medium-sized French water dog with a thick, curly coat and a beard, bred to retrieve waterfowl from marshes.
02 · Historical role
What it was bred for
Retrieving ducks and other waterfowl for hunters in wetlands and estuaries.
03 · Breed development
How it changed
Over time 'barbet' became a loose name for any dog with a long, curly or woolly coat, and barbets and poodles were reportedly long treated as the same breed. After the Second World War it nearly died out, and French breeders revived it from the 1970s, partly with Poodle crosses.
